The name originated from wurnda in the Paljgu language and referred to a type of wood out of which the shields were made. Used primarily as a defensive weapon to ward off spears and boomerangs, they were also carried by performers in ritual contexts. Wunda shields became widely traded through Western, North and South Australia. | |||||||||||
