Mer Island, Torres Straits Islands, Papua New Guinea Late 19th Century Bamboo Length: 76.5 cm. Old label attached. Typical geometric interlocking design found on tobacco pipes from the Torres Straits Islands. The pipe was filled with native tobacco and smoked by men and women, and shared with trading partners and visitors. The burnt-in designs reflected the identity of the owner.
