Canoe prow ornament

Provenance: John & Marcia Friede Collection, Rye, NY, USA; Emile Bouchard Collection, Paris, France.
Carved as a unique ornament for the fishing canoes from Walamo, these elaborately carved prows usually depict the Friar bird which is believed by the local people to be a messenger from their ancestors, as well as guardians watching over the fishermen as sea. An old example, originally in the collection of Marcia and John Friede.
